Becoming an ALS Advocate

For all of you guys and dolls that want to do more to help me fight, you can sign up to become an ALS Advocate. Why should you become an advocate? Good question and I have an even better answer. The facts about ALS are pretty scary.

Consider this:

1.      Fifteen people are diagnosed with ALS every day.

2.      Fifteen people that have ALS die every day.

3.      An estimated 30,000 Americans suffer from ALS on a daily basis.

4.      Lou Gehrig died in 1941 from ALS (66 years ago).

5.      Since 1941, only one drug has been shown to be effective against ALS. It is shown to add 2-3 months to a person’s life expectancy.

6.      If we calculate how many people have died from this disease since Lou Gehrig died, it would astound you. 66*15*365=361,350. The population of New Orleans, LA is about 480,000. Imagine the issues we would be facing now if Katrina took out half of that population.

7.      Drug companies consider us an “orphan disease” because our population is transient. They cannot make big money on us because our expected life expectancy is only 3-5 years.

8.      They can make lots of money promoting the “little blue pill” because you cannot die from ED unless it lasts for more than 4 hours.

9.      There are no accurate counts to determine how many people actually have ALS. Go to ALS Counts to read their facts.

What can you do?

1.      Join the ALS Advocacy Association to receive updates on Legislative Actions

2.      Send letters to your representatives when you receive alerts

3.      Send a letter to your representatives telling them to support HR 2295

4.      Forward this page to all your friends and enemies.

Why?

1.      Because ALS patients are dying at an alarming rate.

2.      We need all the help we can get

3.      The more people that join that do not suffer from ALS, the more the politicians will listen.

4.      You agreed to help in anyway you could.

5.      How can we connect the dots if we aren’t numbering the dots?

How?
